Default Tranny Coolers

Ok so I got to lookin at the stock tranny 'cooler' on the truck the other night and I don't understand why it has an external one yet still runs into the radiator as well. Whats the point in doing it this way, faster warm ups, or just a more consistent temp?

With that being said would it be a good idea to just scrap the entire assembly and go to just a larger aftermarket one and by pass the radiator ports completely?

My truck didnt come with an external cooler but ran through the radiator like you said. When I installed my B&M Supercooler I ran the lines through the stock radiator cooler and then the B&M.

I figure it cant hurt so why not use em both.
Im sure iif you wanted you could just plug up the stock radiator plugs and just use an external cooler.

i ran my cooler on my stang thru the factory heat exchanger and i have
had nothing but overheating problems. my temp from my stall is out ragious and going thru the
rad. is making it hotter. damm efans have to be alot. before stall i never needed my fans. my stall
jsut created too much heat. without stall my fluid was nice and cool. when i get to my stang again
im doing away with the whole idea of going thru the factory heatexchanger.
my cooler is 24,000 B&M

The external is maily for heavy tranny use like racing or towing. But you know that. The reason for the external is just for better cooling while under heavy loads. Mine went through the radiator, but I put an external Hayden cooler on mine. It dropped the temps a bit, but a lot more when I towed.

Its in series with the core in the radiator. So the fluid goes in the radiator core first, out to the external, and back to the tranny. It helps bring the fluid temp down even more than with just the radiator one. If you want it even cooler, just install a small fan in front of the external one. That would bring it down a few degrees and you would'nt need to do any extra plumbing....

I think that's what I'm gonna do. I'm fiing to order the B&M 24,000GVW cooler and get a fan to put behind it. THe only thing is, the smallest fan I can find is a 8" fan and the cooler is only 6" tall. Hmmm .. maybe a motorcycle fan will work!

i just installed my B&M transcooler last night. i ran the oil return line from the radiator to the cooler and back to the transmission. so far so good. i mounted the cooler right in front of the A/c condenser so the air is hitting it first then the condenser. this should keep it cool and there would be no use in putting a fan on it. maybe i can post a pic later.

i do think the motorcycle one would work. but they do sell tranny coolers
with fans. if your not racing severly you should be fine without a tranny fan
if your only towing imsuming just get the largest cooler and that should
be fine.
if you have a large stall than you might encounter some heat problems
