Default Towing vs Gears?

I have a 99 Tahoe 4x2 with 3.08 gears stock, it's a former police cruiser.

I am rolling on 235-75-15 XL tires now and the rearend is loud, probably the outer bearing...

I might have to put in a new gear, but I have to tell you, the truck hauled the car and an open trailer no problem to Louisiana and back. I tended to leave it in 3rd when going up and down hills in Mississippi, but other than that it was fine.

What do you guys think, keep the 3.08's or get some 3.42 takeouts?

Did I mention I go 300-325 miles per tank (26 gal?) with the trailer, Firebird, and 5500 truck weight?

I also do 500 miles/tank highway if I don't mess around.

Let me know!!!

I would make the jump up to 373's if I were you.

And I second that notion. Mine has 3.73's and I have no complaints. Unless you've already found a good deal on the 3.42's I'd go for it. Especially if your towing.
