Default Odometer Reading

Hello All,

I own an 02 Silverado, and was wondering if anyone know where is the actual "Odometer Reading" stored? Is it in the gauge cluster or someplace else on the vehicle such as an ECU or other controller device.

Reason i ask is if i install a Denali cluster is it an absolute must to have it re calibrated to my current mileage. I know this would be more of a legal matter, but what if lets say i just swap them without re calibration and later on put the stock one back in. Is there a way to find out?
Any advice on this is a greatly appreciated. Tks in advance.

The odometer reading stays with the cluster.

I believe it's stored not only in the cluster itself but in your truck's computer. There's got to be a way for dealerships or other shops to get the actual mileage/engine hours without the original cluster. Especially if someone trades their truck in or sells it private owner. They will want to know the ACTUAL mileage, especially if there's been a cluster swap.

As for your situation, if you get a Denali cluster and you don't want to pay to have your mileage flashed from your old cluster to the new one just get an odometer sticker for your truck's door sill. Most reputable companies (or GM parts distributors) send one of these stickers with your new cluster. If they don't, ask them to send you one. I got one with my Escalade cluster but did not need it because I had my mileage flashed to the new cluster (and I have a receipt to prove it to the dealership if need be).

The sticker just has a space for the date you made the change and a space for the old cluster's mileage. If you do another swap (back to original cluster) just change the mileage on the sticker or get another sticker and update the mileage on it. It's that easy.

I put in a denali cluster in my truck at 800 miles and recently had warranty work done with nothing mentioned. BUT, I've also seen the mileage reading from the pcm with my autotap. And it was showing the extra 800 so I know it wasen't reading it from the new cluster. Maybe they only question you if the mileage shows up lower later on after they've already recorded it at a higher number on a previous service or repair.
