timing chain questions?
#1
my truck has 112k miles on it, all highway miles. i drive 60+ miles every day to work.
gonna do a cam swap in the next few weeks, thinking about putting in a new timing chain, but i'd like the install to go as easy and fast as possible. just wondering if any of you guys have torn down one of these motors that has a good bit of mileage on it and found the timing chain to still be in good shape?
i'd like to be able to do the swap by leaving the oil pump in place, seems like it'd be a pain in the *** to change the chain on the truck.
and whats the deal w/ these chains, seems like i read somwehere that a double roller needs modifications to the balancer (?) to make it fit?
just curious, ill change it if its sloppy. just wanted to see if anyone else has any input/advice. yeah i know it'd be good to do it while i was in there anyway, but if the thing's in decent shape, and the motor will likely need a rebuild by 200k miles anyway...you see my point?? not sure how many more miles ill get out of it before the nitrous takes its toll on things. comp also makes on that is very good..
I changed mine out when did my cam swap, and it is a fairly easy swap..
also the oil pump would be a good thing to swap out also if you have got some mileage on the motor.. just for insurance..
you can unbolt the oil pan and let it hang down in the front and slide the oil pump out, and put the new one in.
just becarefull not to drop the screw into the pan. that would be a PITA

I think Comps kit has a JWIS chain.

I put a hardened Rollmaster single ($80) on mine when I did my heads/cam at 100k. The stock chain had quite a bit of slack in it so I felt good about changing it. You do have to remove the oil pump to change it. Just be sure to get the pickup tube in without pinching/damaging the o-ring.
