If I had to do it again I would have gotten the VHO but they didn't mention to anybody that they would be out a couple of months after I bought my truck. What are your plans with it? or as they said buy a used 4.8 and drop a ls1 or 6.0 or stroker in it with teh saved money and pimp it out.
My plan is to get one with an A4, and I would like to lower it some, nothing excessive though. Basically I want to make the full size equivalent of an S10 with the ZQ8 suspension, a V8, and start modding. I am really thinking I should go with a used short bed reg cab with a 5.3. Is the 5.3 any good for modding? My goal would probably be 400 horsepower (flywheel) like I probably have in my Camaro. It will be used for light duty, like trips to the dump, etc.

F8L is putting down some serious power with his 5.3. Would you go FI or NA?? You will definately need some sort of power adder to hit 400 with a 5.3.

I have the chevy 02 ecsb with a Kenne Bell supercharger and have about 417 at the flywheel I have 344 at the wheels so you do the math and I love my setup. Any thing you chose will be fun to mod. Good luck to you.

Car Craft is featuring an article this month where a head/cam/intake 5.3 put down 458 to the flywheel.

its a very ugly setup, but it did put crazy peak numbers down.

Here's what I say. Get a truck, new, used, don't matter, regular cab, short bed with a stepside bed. As long as it has a v8, you're doing OK. If you plan on sinking some money into it anyways, go with the 4.8. First thing up, get a 6.0 and swap the 4.8 with it. Before the 6 goes in, do what you want with it, heads/cam, whatever. The heads and cam off your car will work just fine.

Here's why ..
The RCSB is the lightest configuration you can get. The stepside bed sheds another 150 pounds or so. The 4.8 will be cheaper initially than the 5.3, so you may as well save some money there since you can't get one stock with a 6.0.

With the motor out when, before you make the swap, you will have it nice and out in the open to make the cam swap easy.

If only I had a 6.0 my 4.8 would find its way into a s-10 body sitting at my dads.

I would find a new or used RCSB w/ a 4.8 and then find a good used 6.0, swap it and sell the 4.8... make a little money back and then have some fun with it... Now I do know there is a guy on here w/ a 5.3 runnin high 12's N/A so you should be able to get that 6.0 runnin pretty easily...

Looking back, that's what I wish I would've done... but I was too young and stupid at the time... and I just wanted a new truck... I would see if you could order one w/ a 6.0 from the factory... but I dunno if you can or not... good luck and welcome to the truck section in advance...

try going with the dodge rt/10 or Ford's Lightning, then I'd go with GM's V8 regular cabs, well maybe the Titan!

My truck fits my duties the best. All weather handling/traction, performance, etc.

If I were not in the snow-belt, I'd have got a 2wd 4.8 RCSB with a stick. I'd pull the 4.8 out ASAP, and do a LS1/T56 swap.
