Default Thermostat Question inside...

I was going out today to buy a HPP3 and found out I need the 160* thermostat. I saw it listed on summit for $50. Can I just get one at Pepboys for under $10 or do I have to buy the hypertech thermo? Is there any difference between the 2 thermostats other than saving $40? (Saving money for spring break )

Which thermo should i get?

...Stupid school money has not arrived yet

HPP3 works ok w/o one, but i have a feeling that this may help. i run 87 octane right now, and have ran 93 before too. have noticed a slight difference (seat of pants) w/ 93 but swithed back due to high gas prices i plan on getting that G-tech comp that was posted earlier today. hopefully this will give me some quick #'s and i can see the difference on paper

the HPP3 will work fine w/out the thermo. i think it just bumps timing a little if you actually have it. and of course the 160* thermo will drop yur temps a little. but if yur really looking for cooler temps look into some electric fans.

yea, what he said, the 160 stat or bb mod won't help much without some electric fans. your temp will pause at 160-170 for about 5 minutes till the radiator warms up then it will go right on up to wherever it was before.

it works pretty good for dropping your temperature, you just arent going to get any performance gain from doing it.

well ok then, that was my experience. with the stock t-stat and the 160 unit i saw 1/2 gauge unless i was going down the highway then it would go down to 1/4 but anytime i was crusing around looking for a race it would just go right up to 1/2 gauge like with the stock stat.

unless your constantly moving it is the clutch fan that will determine your temp.

Parish it sounds like youre unit is a little bit messed.

You should run about a consistent 185 on the move with a 160 thermo and should stay at about 185 anytime youre moving.

It shouldn't be going to 210 unless you're at idle for for a good while.....

hmmm, could be, i would see 210 after only 10 minutes of city driving, i could see it pause at the 1/4 mark and then start moving again after a few minutes. my fan clutch may have been messed up.

now i see 170-174 all the time, after a run it might get to 179 but then falls right back down to 172 or so in just about 3 minutes, this is on a 85deg night parked after the run.
