thermostat

Since we're in 100-105 degree weather in Texas now i was wanting to know if it would be a good idea to put a different thermostat in the truck. It runs right under the 210* mark so i'm guessing somewhere around 190*. It's just an idea, gonna ask around first to see which stat to get and everything. It's a stock 5.3. Also, are these hard to put in on these motors, all the one's i've done have been up top on the intake.

They are not hard at all. I put in a 160 from SLP it keeps me around 180 because I have done nothing to tell my fans to come on that low. GenIII's like warmer temps I would not go lower than 180-190 range. You can get all different brands from different manufactures I'm not sure which one is the best. I picked mine up for $20.00.Be sure to get a gallon of dexi-cool (orange stuff)antifreeze to replace lost fluid.

Do not use a 160* stat. You will lose 1 mpg on average, and there are no gains from doing this. At minimum, use a 180* stat. Either way, the O.E. stat and a properly maintained cooling system will not allow your engine to overheat.
The only other benefits are slightly lower tranny temps.
Don't use a 160* stat unless your are using forced induction.

That's fine, I have the same exact 160* t-stat. It keeps temps right around where your saying (more like 175-185* at cruising speeds or when A/C is on. At idle and no A/C, it will still run at factory temps). Though, I still lost 1 mpg average by doing this. That was my point to my response. If that doesn't matter to him, then go a head and go for the 160* stat.
If I were to do it again, I'd use a 180* stat.
Just my .02 worth.
