I got a Nelson tune in the mail and have the O2 sensors off. When I take off the cat. converters do I need to put an x-pipe on there? Should I be worried about the law when I take them off?
Don't wanna get caught-should I gut them? I have dual flowmaster 50's on there currently and I figure it wont be too load. Let me know.

Personally I wouldn't gut them unless you plan on doing a big cam and headers at min. Blown or Turbo i would also gut them.
Otherwise it just makes the truck smell worse for not much of a gain. On the LS1 cars though gains can be found with this mod.

You could do that but like I said, don't expect a ton of HP *shrugs*
Just pray the local cops are not into checking for modified exhaust. Here in Ca. they check for that stuff all the time

here they never check and it is a nealy 0 cost mod so unless you are a tree hugger i see no reason not to weld in some tubes.
seems like most people estimate around 5hp and it will smell a little, like a old car and i like that smell. my woman hates that smell(she can goto hell
)
you can also turn off COT(cat over temp), that is reportadly good for around 10hp but it only kicks in after it is floored for several sec's. for me i could see it kick in about the top of 2nd or right after the 2-3shift. your a/f ratio goes about 1 full point richer. you can shut that feature off with programing but only if you dont have cats.

holy crap, looks like webtv's new upgrade is going to let me back on here!!! i took my cats off and put a pipe, but if it was possible, i would have had some kind of converter shell welded over it so if a cop looks under there, it looks like it has converters.
I got a nice gain from it.

Thanks for the imput. I'm the farthest from a tree hugger you will find
I haven't heard any stories in Okieland about cops checking for cats...then of course Tulsa WAS the oil capital of the world so we don't mind some burning oil.

I did this to both of my trucks. Each time it cost me 45 to have the pipes I cut welded back up. It cost me roughly 200 to have the metal dug out of my eye though.
I say do it if you need it, stock or bolt ons dont really need IMO. If you do it WHERE EYE PRTECTION though. It sucks getting metal dug out of your eyeball with a needle.

Wow, I never knew our trucks had that, is it just a safety mechanism so the cats dont over heat and get destroyed?
