The T56 would be a lot lighter and less parasitic drag than an 80e without doubt. That would be another reason.

Surely it couldn't be THAT hard. Get the clutch assemply from a standard truck along with the hydraulics and then get some custom or flexible lines to run to the T56, cut a hole in the floor, put a boot on it and call it done. Obviously I would have to get a shifter made or make one myself, but I'm thinking that would be the easier part.
I put a LS1 / T56 in my truck about 6 months ago and like it. It was no problem putting in but I started with a 5 speed truck which all you would need would be the pedals, master cylinder and hydraulic line and a minimum of 4.10's. I have just installed a set of 4.56's but haven't got my computer back yet from Nelson to drive it.

Did the holes in the floor line up? What about the boot for the shifter, anything special? Did you have to use a special shifter of any sort? WHat kind of times have you turned out with it?

I had to cut another hole in the floor and used a Hurst super boot and a Hurst stick that is designed for their other type shifters, the bolt patten will match the stub that sticks up from your trans.
