Swapping from the weak '99 5.3L.......
#1
I've done a pretty good amount of research on Vortec's improved line-up of engines. Ive been told numerous times how weak the '99-'00 PCMs are, etc. Well my 5.3 has got around 115K on it. It still runs fine just pings every now and then. I was think of either of the L33 5.3L, or the LQ4/LQ9 6.0L.
How hard and how compatible would the new all-aluminum L33 5.3L swap be?Hell it sounds like a nice engine, with flat top pistons, aluminum block 310hp.
Here's the dilemma:
- Will my current engine harness work with the swap?
- Can Nelson tune for a engine swap? I know i would need to tune for either the L33 or the 6.0.
- The '03+ engines have the electronic throttles. Isn't there a completely different control module for those?
- Since Im running 37's, my 4L60E could eventually blow. Would the new blocks be compatible with my 4L60E or the 4L80E?
I just need to compile a list of all the **** I am going to need for this. Thanks in advance.

I just finished up this swap myself, well waiting on an improved tune. I'd go with the 6.0 liter. Everything you have will swap over. If you get a crate engine like I did, it'll come with the Fly-by-wire TB. You'll need to reuse your cable one. You will also have to remove the spacer on the crank and reuse your old Flexplate. Or, you could get a Fuddle TC and use either plate. When shopping around, don't get a 99-2000 model 6.0, unless your getting a smoking deal. The longer crank can cause some headaches.
While you have it out, I'd do TC. It's just sitting there smiling at you, waiting to be swapped. It would also be a good time to do headers and engine mounts, if you should be so inclined. Only a tune is required for this swap.
Hope this helps some.
