Default Supercharger Survey

This one goes out to everyone driving a supercharged GM truck.

1. What year, make, model, engine, tranny is your truck?
2. What brand supercharger did you buy?
3. Did the kit come with tuning, fuel pumps, injectors, etc.?
4. Have you upgraded your supercharger? (smaller pulleys, tuning, etc.?)
5. Have you had to upgrade your truck? (tranny, headers, etc.?)
6. What is your overall rating of the kit, install, and performance?

Thanks guys. I am sure there are many of us that could benefit from your valuable experience!

1)1999, Chevrolet Silverado, 5.3L, 4L60e with TransGo shift kit
2)Whipple SC
3)two 42lb. auxilary fuel injectors for "wet manifold" setup (my other 8 are the puny 21pounders)
4)Same 4'' pulley that came with the stock kit (My tune can be found at www.ls1edit.com)
5)I have AS&M 1 3/4'' Long Tubes. My tranny is on its way out...well second gear
6)The Whipple kit I bought used, but it runs really well. I like making full boost at 2000rpms instead of waiting for a centrifugal to spool up. The install was cake. I timed myself, and I can go back to Naturally aspirated (including tuning) in half an hour. And I can go back to being Supercharged in twenty minutes I was doing some polishing to the SC that was easier if it was removed that is why I know this SC to NA back to SC thing.

No problems so far with the Whipple making boost. There is one thing I have come to notice on it though lately. It has gotten a little bit noisier at idle i.e. sounds like the gears inside of it have become louder. My friend's Whipple is the same way at idle, so I guess this is normal. I like the kit

6. I loved it when it was cold but, now it is not preforming as well as I had hoped. I still love it, I will just have to play with it to get it the way I want it.

1. 2001 Chevy 2500HD 6.0L/4L80E/4.10 gears
2. Powerdyne centrifugal kit
3. FMU (12:1 calibration), Superchip tuner, K&N filter
4. Smaller 2.70” pulley (more on this further down), Spearco Water Injection
5. Flowmaster exhaust, Transgo Shift kit
6. Rating 1-10: Instructions = 6, Ease of install = 8, Performance gains = 8

OK guys, you have to remember that I use this truck for towing (11,000 lbs. 5th wheel) not racing.

This kit is a good choice for someone on a budget. I was originally trying to save up for the Magnacharger (which my wife said NO to!) and I had done some research on Powerdyne as another option. In November 2002 my wife found the complete (NEW) Powerdyne kit for my truck on sale for $2,500. She, in her ultimate wisdom, decided this would be a good Christmas gift! It wasn’t the kit I originally wanted, but definitely better than nothing! I was able to install it about 2 weeks before Christmas so it could be used for trip over the holidays. Going very, very slow, it took about 14 hours (I could probably do it now in 3 hours!). I had a hard time deciding how I wanted to reroute the EGR valve and heater hoses. Two of the mounting bolts were the wrong size, the belt was 1” too long, and I needed to buy (hunt for) a fuel line disconnect tool. Tuning took about 5 minutes.

It is definitely a big power increase! Boost comes in slow compared to a roots/twin screw, but not too bad. I get about 1.5 psi at 1,500 rpms, 2 psi at 2,000 rpms, 3-3.5 psi at 3,000 rpms, 4.5 psi at 4,000 rpms, and almost 6 psi at 5,200 rpms (red line). For trailer towing, I could now run OD most of the time (70 mph @ 2,300 rpms) and would occasionally downshift to 3rd on hills (65 mph @ 3,000 rpms). On the stock Powerdyne kit, I would recommend flipping the bypass valve. This allows you to go into boost without as much throttle pressure.

I have tried the 2.70” pulley (good for 2 psi extra, i.e. 7.5 psi). Without retuning the truck, power is down, and the pinging has come back, hence the water injection system. After a month of messing with it (and due to budget), I have decided to go back to the stock pulley. Later this year I will have it retuned for the 2.70” pulley.

Hope this helps!

1. 2003 Chevrolet Silverado SS 6.0L(LQ9) 4L65-E
2. Magnacharger Radix
3. Superchips tuner, aux fuel pump, larger injectors and the all important intercooler
4. Nope. Only had it for a week. Probably not possible to do much more boost due to the high compression engine.
5. Nope. May do some trany upgrades for peace of mind.
6. What is your overall rating of the kit, install, and performance?
The kit was very complete. I had it professionally installed, so I could get the 3yr/36k mile drive train warranty. As far as performance goes, I have only had it a week, I will let you know after I take it to the drag strip On the street, the low end power is great, launches and passing are a blast!! The real test will be when summer comes, then I will see if the intercooler does it's thing.

1-2K Silverado 4.8(deceased) with a 4LCRAP-E
2-ATI Procharger P1-SC kit
3-inline fuel pump, FMU, and intercooler
4-not yet
5-HAD to upgrade: tranny-burned up most forward clutches and started on the band
6-with the exception of the nightmare tubing installation, the kit is outstanding. everything went together perfectly (except the tubing) and made a night and day difference. got greedy and turned things up and ended up hammering a hole in my #7 piston with 13#
