Question Stupid Exhaust Question

Okay, this may be stupid, but here goes:

I have an '04 VHO and have been thinking about going with a Magnaflow catback (for an SS). My question is do I really need to replace the whole catback? Seems like the factory tailpipe should flow quite well; maybe I should just replace the muffler? Seems that for 30% of the cost of an entire system, the muffler only might not be a bad way to go. That would leave more funds for other mods.

Thanks in advance for any input.

That sounds like a great idea. You do have the 3.5" exhaust right?

I think a bunch of guys here have replaced just the muffler , plus the rest of the exhaust is stainless so you know it'll last. Sounds cost effective IMO.

I think the tail pipe on the VHO's and SS's are built well enough to not worry about. It will save you lots of money and probably give very similar results. Just get the right size muffler and have it welded in.

The tailpipe is 3", not 3.5". I still don't think that would reduce/restrict the flow that much. Snake, that is funny you call out Burnet. I grew up in Liberty Hill, and my sister just moved from there to Burnet. Small world.

Did you ever go to school in Georgetown? If so did you know any Browning's, or Wright's?

If the VHO has the same engine and tranny as the SS, why would they put on a smaller exhaust?

I didn't go to school here, I just live & work here now. As far as the exhaust, I don't know why, but I did go measure it to be certain...yep, still 3". I didn't know SS's had 3.5"
