im new here but i have been reading alot about stall converters and had a few questions about them. i am still a bit confused on exactly what a higher stall does for you, i understand it allows you to launch at a higher rpm but does it have any effect after launching? for example does it help from like a 40mph-70-mph punch? and what stall is best 2600, 2800, or 3000. also does it affect the regular drivability of the truck? right now i have the crappy 3.42 gears with a open differential and cannot decide wether to invest in a set of 3.73 gears with a posi unit or go with a new stall. which would be the best to get first? thanks in advance for any responses

It all depends on what you use your truck for and how far you are willing to go in the long run. As far as gears, my opinion is that for a daily driver truck that won't see much track, 3.73 w/posi-if you want strictly performance, then 4.10 w/posi. Converters can help you from 40 mph roll if its big enough, say 3800 on up but, you'll be giving up a lot of driveability. Again, if you just want some performance increase and have $$$ to spend, 2600 is ok but for bit more there's the yank 3000 that seems to be a favorite.

Converter without posi is a bad choice.IMO,do gears(3.73's about the best all around gear as far as gas mileage and performance goes)and posi then decide which converter suits your needs.Hope this helps and WELCOME to the site!

Go with a converter, I just had 4.10's and posi installed and shaved absolutely no time off from what my 3.42's were getting me. Ya, I'm pissed! What could possible be the reason for this? I hear a 3000 stall will get you a 1/2 second in the 1/4 mile, but that is what I also heard about 3.42's to 4.10's. Damn bolt-on bullshit!

I went from 3.42s to 4.10s with Eaton and only dropped .2, I was expecting close to .4 tenths. Even with all my mods I still haven't ran a 14 sec timeslip. My truck would not hook up at all befor the posi. I lost lots of street races due a bad launch. With any power stock tires (or tire with out posi) wont hold.

thanks alot for all the responses, i think i am going to go with the 3.73 gears with a posi unit, probally an eaton, before i consider getting a stall converter. right now ive got 285/60/18 goodyear eagle II tires on it and traction is sometimes a problem, nothing compared to the stock tires but still somtimes aggrivating, but really i just get sick of leaving only one mark so i think this gears will be the best thing to do first
