a small block usually refers to the smaller engine family that a manufacturer produces (the 262-400 chevy, the 260-351W ford, and the 318-360 chrysler)

a long block is usually a block and rotating assembly along with the heads and valvetrain (cam, lifters, etc.) no intake or accessories.

Do you mean "short block"/"long block"? A short block is a block with crank, rods, pistons, sometimes cam and timing set. A long block also has heads and valvetrain, and may include "tin", which is an old term for the covers (oil pan, valve covers, timing cover, etc.)

I think he means short block or long block.. Short block is just the bottom end, no heads, or cam usually, while the long block usually has the heads, cam-some valve train.. Like the above stated
