Default Shift kits?

OK guys the age old question, everyone that wants to sell you a kit says it will magically prolong tranny life. Everyone who is afraid your truck will be cooler than theirs if you get one says that the tranny will fall out the bottom of the truck as soon as you leave the tranny shop what do we think on this one?

I have a Transgo Shift Kit (3 washers) and it shifts like a beast. Shifts are much firmer and faster than stock. I can break loose my tires on my 1-2 shift at will. Not sure if it prolongs the tranny life, but it is definatly fun. Kent.

Can the shift kits be installed at home with the tranny still in the truck? ON the old TH350s you could just pull the valve body, drill some holes in the separator plate and change the servo guts and voila! 2nd and 3rd gear tire chipping. I thought the HPP3 was the only way to stiffen the shifts on these but apparently there is REAL shift kits available now. Where to get em, ,how much $$? and how hard to install? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Yes you can install the TransGo at home with the tranny in the truck. I installed one in my truck last weekend. It was not too difficult, just very teadius (sp) and time consuming. My truck should be back together tonight, because I had to wait to recieve my torque converter. I'll tell you how I like it. I only installed 2 washers, but I will keep the other washer to install later if I want to firm it up some more.

I bought mine from tbyrne for about $110.

A guy here locally says his company will install the kit and corvette servo for 200 buck includes parts and labor. I think this is a pretty good deal so I probably won't do it myself.

Gray gmc, all you need is a 10mm socket a flat headed screwdriver, c-clamp, you need to mix alittle vasoline and tranny fluid as a libricant for your new seals. The actual job if you have a lift will take about thirty minutes. I've done three, and sold many others. Just take it out in order and put it back in in order, making sure you lube all the new gaskets. Any nick or pin whole in any of the new gaskets and the tranny will not shift properly.
Good Luck,
Hyde

Y2K2Sierra, gimme some feedback after your road test. I want tire chirping 1-2 shifts and FIRM 2-3 shifts and I don't think the HPP3 is gonna do it. $109 for a hard shifting tranny is cheap.

And I love it. I only installed 2 washers, so 3 would make it shift even harder. And I may add the extra washer at the next fluid change. It definitely shifts a lot harder then the HPP3 did. And that is comparing the HPP3 and the stock converter, with the TransGo and a 3000 stall converter. And higher stall converters cause the tranny shift to be mushier.

It will chirp second and also has a pretty firm shift going into 3rd.
