Default Shift kit worth it?

My truck is a 99 gmc reg cab short bed (5.3L), 3.42 gears. I'm wanting to know if a shift kit is worth it. What is good about them does it hurt a stock transmission and can I install one without taking it to a shop to have it put in? Will it decrease my 0-60 time? Also I'm wanting to know what type of transmision I have, is it a 4L60E, that way I know what type of kit to get?

ive got one on my 2001, and love it. as for the wife thats a different story. you should be able to call the dealership and give them the vin # and they should be able to tell you what tranny. personally i dont know. with the shift kit and servo i have snapped the output shaft in two. but i think it had to do with some tranny work that was done at a lacole shop. sh*ty work.

i agree with 01. i am pretty darn sure you have a 4l60e. as far as the shift kit. i have heard that it will prolong the life of the tranny and is supposed to speed up your times. meaning, you will go quicker. do that in conjunction with a servo, then neck snapping with occur..
