Default Running Hot

A friend of mine has a 99 Siverado. It was running hot so he figured thermostat and changed it. Wrong. Could it be the water pump? Sensor? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does it totally overheat, or just run warmer than normal?

It was overheating after about two minutes of idling. We got it fixed though. It must have been an air pocket.
