Default Ring seating in engine

How long does it take for rings to seat in properly. Engine has about 2000 miles on it and has used 2 -2.5 quarts of oil. Been running rotella oil to break it in.

Depends on the rings, but even with moly rings I would sure think they are seated by now.

Shouldn't take that long. If you're sucking that much oil up it's time for a leak down test. Who built the motor?

There's an easy way to check this. If you pull the plugs and go into each hole with a pipe cleaner or something you should have oil showing up on it. Hey, it's not all that often a motor gets finished and works perfectly for the next 200k miles. Unless you paid a shop to do it.

Mine had about 8k miles on it and was still consuming oil. After a few hard runs at the track they were seated and I had no more trouble.

I'm a firm believer in running the **** out of an engine to seat the rings. You want high load and high cylinder pressure as that is what actually presses the rings against the cylinder walls. The spring tension does nothing in comparison....

Press the gas, don't be scared.

rings typically seat within the first 15 mins of running an engine. if not, than it wasn't properly built to begin with. the best way to insure your rings seat all the way is to break it in with lots of boost! at least that's how we do supras.
