Replacing stock manifolds with Mid-Length headers...
#1
Anyone know where to purchase already bent header kits to weld up yourself?Or a kit that has a bunch of pre bent random lengths you can cut or add on as needed?Ive decided to fabricate my own set of mid length headers that I can just swap in/out with my stocks come smog time(yes I'm in CA). Wherever the collector ends,I'm going to mark it and cut out the stock set up.Then weld on a flange and just fit in my new mid length in.Similar to the stock/shorty header swap out.
I was reading that granted you won't get as much hp as you would with LT's.Mids are still better than shorties, and you also get close to what LT's offer on the low end torque?I could be wrong.I never hear to many people running mids so it's hard weigh the pros/cons of them.

I've never seen mids for a truck but some guys here have had success with fbody headers and if fbody LTs fit the trucks I dont see why mids wouldnt but thats just my guess. Look up MAC mids for a 98-02 Fbody.

doug's headers does/did have mid-length headers
why build some just to switch them out at test time? just buy some pacesetters or ebay special's
if you do build mid length's then put the stock cats after them and mount a heat shield over the "manifolds" and act like you dont know about it

Thorleys are pretty price.I know the price metal and what goes into welding.Their mark ups are way high. It's cheaper to fab it myself.
I planned on moving the stock cars further down. Then just add on the difference to the stock manifolds. So come smog time,if whomever does happen to notice headers without a carb sticker? Then I can easily swap.theoretically...

I understand building things because that's what you like to do. I'm the same way, anytime I can save a buck by doing it myself, I will. Unless your dead set on building your own, the MAC f-body
mid lengths do fit good. Just have to bend the trans cooler lines just a little bit. I know headers can be high compared to what the metal costs, but if you figure they guys the have to design the headers for each vehicle. Metal costs, ceramic coating. Buy all the tubing benders, dies, welders, and etc. And also advertise their products, headers are actually pretty cheap for all the cost that goes into making them.

I had a set of Hamm mids on my 2000 4.8 RCSB. But I've never seen another set. They were easy to install but they needed a bit of exhaust fabrication after the fact. I'd just settle on some readily available long tubes.

I had a set of Hamm mids back in the day. I was looking for a set about a year ago for my Tahoe but couldn't find any.
