the awd SS's have the 10 bolt and the 2wd have the 9.5 14 bolt.

Yup, the 14 bolt came in the Max trucks and 2WD SS trucks. The AWD SS trucks got the 10 bolt...I assume because GM thought w/ the AWD the 6.0 wouldn't stress the rear end like it would in a 2WD/selectable 4WD truck.

Don't mean to thread jack but Would swapping an ss 14bolt in place of an 10bolt be a good upgrade? or is there any known problems with these?

You Guys Have Never Seen A 14 Bolt Gm Rear Diff Go Out? You Kiddin' Me? Really? Trust Me The 14 Bolt Rear Diff's Are Just As Suceptable To Damage As Anything Else. They Are Built Stronger But I've See Sever Come In My Shop That Look To Be Exploded...lol.
