Default Ready to buy, need advice please...

Hey guys, I have the money, and Im ready to buy a cam for my truck. Its a 99 RCSB 4.8L 2WD w 90k Miles... I have a Nelson 93 octane tune, efans, and exhaust, I want to add a cam, headers, and a torque converter. Keep in mind this is my only truck, daily driver.

I was thinking of going with the GM Hotcam (219/228 .525/.525 112), what I need to know is, Will the kit (PN:12480033) that includes the cam itself, and LS6 springs, come with everything I need to put this cam and springs in the truck? So basically can I buy this kit and put it in? Or would I need retainers, shims etc?

I saw that Jegs sales a kit for the LT1, that comes with the hotcam, springs and roller rockers.... Jegs PN:809-12480002, Would this kit work in my truck? (being that mine is not a 5.7?)

Long story short, I want to put the GM Hot cam in my 4.8, what do I need to buy?

Next question, will a TB stall work ok with this setup?

Was looking at Pacesetter LT's also, but my truck is lowered 5-7, is this going to be a problem? Ive seen them on a 4-6 drop...

Last question, since my truck has almost 100K miles on it, someone told me that I take a chance of harming my tranny, by changing the converter with high mileage.

Sorry for the long post, but I want to order the parts tomorrow if possible, just need a little bit of reassurance first. How do you guys think the 4.8 is going to do with this cam, anyone running it in a 4.8? Any sound clips!?

Please let me know what you think...

The Hot cam is a poor choice for the LS based truck motors, do a search on this and you will find a lot of info for your cam Questions. Theres much better cam choices out there for our trucks. I have heard the Hot cam is a bad choice for a 5.3 much less the 4.8....

Comp cams or Lingenfelter makes great cams for your truck.
The TB Converter should still work out fine for your application.
Just make sure you buy the right cam that will work well with the TB converter.
I'm not very cam savy about which would be the best one, but there are a lot of guys here that can guide you in the right direction.
I would replace your roller rockers and push rods as well while your changing out the cam. You should also use new spring retainers and clips as well when you change out the springs. Remember to torque the rockers arms down to the exact torque specs!
Good Luck!

Jim

I think if you do get a tr220 you will need about a 2800 stall cause it would only stall to about 2500-2600 behind the 4.8l.

Ok, from the answers Im getting, the hotcam may be a bad idea? Why is this? Which cam do you guys recommend? Please be more specific, which cam is the T220?

--EDIT--
Ohh ok, you guys are talking about a Thunder Racing 220/220 .551/.551 (112 or 114?) This would be a better choice for my little 4.8? How would driveability be? And how does it sound?

well the cam and stall should be good, just don't forget to change out your 19lbs injectors to the 24lbs ones, more fuel for the set up never hurts.

The hotcam you are talkin about doesnt even sound like it will work in your truck... it is designed for the LT1.. any LS1 based cam will work though. the tr 220 is pretty popular right now but i wouldnt go much bigger than that with the 4.8 if i were you. a healthy stall of 3000 will probably be needed too... just do a search and you will find a million threads on cam selection..
