Default Ram Air Question

Thinking of installing a ram air kit. Not sure if I should go homemade or brand name(Volant) Question is: During everyday driving in the rain, any water get up into the filter or intake? I'm sure the filter will grab it right? Any first hand exp. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm probably gonna catch a little hell on this, But I think if you run an open filter like K&N and AirRaid there is sufficeint flow from the open area around the filter and pulling air in from all the openings around it. As far as UPD and Volant (they make one), you could gain from a ram air type setup. as far as water in the intake, some of the guys that have done it are using an A/C register and shuting it during rain.

Y2K: That's exactly my point, Ram Air will show the best gains with a box type filter housing, ALMOST pointless on an open filter system. I never said which one had the best gains. Personally, I'm not a pimp to any of these systems. So I am open minded to all after market air intake systems. I have a K&N and had an AirRaid. Why don't I get a UPD? Because I didn't notice any gains when I jumped to the FIPK fro the AirRaid. IMO, they are all very good and very similar in gains.

Thanks for the info. What size/kind of a/c vent do you recommend? How are you attaching it to the bottom at the tow hook intake?
Thanks

Well, I've had several intakes on my truck and my home made ram air with the UPD lid and tube is the best I've had. I started with a K&N drop in filter, no gains at all. Then went to a K&N FIPK and it worked good, then started playing with the ram air idea. My home made ram air with the stock air box and tube performed a little better than the FIPK, so I stayed with the ram air set up. Now with the addition of the UPD lid and tube, it's even better. If you don't have the cash to get a UPD, just do the ram-air, it's better in my opinion than the FIPK. The filter in the FIPK always felt hot to me, even with the heat shield. The stock air box does a much better job keeping the filter and incoming air cool, and with the ram air, it flows just as well as the FIPK. Here's a link to a post about my ram air set up.

As far as water, I did get just a few drop in when it rained but nothing that was a problem. Now, if you have a 4x4 and get into mud and creeks, then I can see a problem. As far as a K&N filter, I just got done testing my GMS maf & K&N filter against a stock maf and Purolator paper filter. The GMS maf worked and reduced my 0-60 times by .15 seconds, which is what Granatelli claims. The K&N filter made ZERO difference, even with the ram-air air, the paper filter performs as well if not a touch better. Do the ram air and you can use a paper filter, I like Purlator. Then get the UPD intake with out the K&N, it's all you'll need. Of course, this is just my opinion, you'll hear others.

For the scoop, I'm using a 4x10 rectangular a/c register like the one in your house that's on the floor or ceiling. It has a round 4" opening on the back that I attached the duct to, I got it at Home Depot in the Heating/AC section. The 4" black duct I got from Pep Boys, it comes in 6' lengths. The register has four bendable lips on it, I'm using one of them to keep the scoop in place. You have to trim the scoop at about a 45* angle to get in place behind the gray plastic lower air dam. When you trim the scoop, leave one of the long reinforced lips on, you'll need it. I used the hole next to the passenger side fog light (I don't have tow hooks) for the scoop opening. The truck frame is above the opening, use the one lip of the scoop you leave on after you trim it and wedge it up between the truck frame and air dam. Then I took a nylon strap and looped it over the frame and under the scoop and tied it all together (like a belt for your pants). I painted the scoop black to keep it hidden and the 4" duct is black plactic, I think it looks good and it does work. The scoop and duct only cost about $20-25, much cheaper than an FIPK. Use a 4" hole saw to cut the hole in the bottom of the air box, then reinstall the air box and outline the hole on the lower mounting plate. Don't guess on the mounting plate hole, the airbox lines up kind of funky, you'll mess up (I did). Once you've outlined the hole on the lower mounting plate, remove the air box and plate. You'll need a saber or jig saw to cut the hole in the mounting plate, it's thick and tough. Once that hole it cut out, clean up the edges and reinstalled both. Then all you have to do is run the 4" duct from the air box dwon to the scoop, you're done. Enjoy!
