The top line is the return line back to the tranny. You can run the fluid through the stock cooler and hook the return line to your 24kgvw cooler. Then run it from your 24kgvw cooler to the tranny. The fluid should never get hot like that.

I don't have a need for a larger radiator at the moment, but mine has a small leak and if I am going to replace it I might as well put something in a little better. Although I haven't been around on this board for close to a year now, I can't count out the fact that the 5.3L will be switched out in the future at some point.
