race gas?

can you run a 118 octane race gas without any side effects?ive heard it can burn your o2 sensors.thinking of trying it at the track this weekend.anyone with experience would be appreciated.

do you have a real NEED for the higher octane? cuz from what i understand if you don't need it, too much octance will slow you down because it retards combustion.

there is no real need for it. i just thought the higher octane would help?maybe not?my cousin runs it in his grand national and he offered it to me.just courious what it would do in our trucks.

Dont do it <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> you will destroy o2 sensors,and see 0 performance increase.The gn guys run it too fight detonation at high boost.

Octane doen't give you more hp, octane is a resistance to detonation. The fuel itself won't "fry" the 02 sensor it will coat the 02 sensors and ruin its sampling ability same with the cataylitc convertor. The same can be said for coolant or cheap RTV used in an engine rebuild. Their are some good unleaded performance fuels but they are around the 100 range.

can someone who knows these kind of things explain to me then why my truck performs better on 93 octane than it does on 87, even if i'm not getting detonation with either. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Octane is the ability to resist detonation. Research Octane+Motor Octane/2 (R+M/2).
More timing/boost/FI requires more octane to prevent premature fuel combustion (detonation). Really high octane (110+) fuel has lead usually. Lead will totally screw up your valves, plugs, and O2's. Highest unleaded you can get at the 1/8th track here is 104 by Sunoco.
crazyidiot4.8... there isn't any differnce in using 93 over 87 in stock apps. Well your wallet will be lighter! It may be percieved but it isn't true. Go dyno your truck with 93 and 87, you will see there is no difference.
Many people I have seen use "Toulene" (114) and "Xylene" (117) to make their own high octane gas. Both are about $3/gal in bulk, it is found in paint stores and chemical distrubutors.
1 gal of 93 + 1 gal of 114 Toulene = 103.5oct
3 gal of 93 + 1 gal of 114 Toulene = 98.25oct
1 gal of 93 + 1 gal of 117 Xylene = 105oct
3 gal of 93 + 1 gal of 117 Xylene = 99 oct
1 gal of 93 + 2 gal of 117 Xylene = 109 oct!
