Question For You CA Guys - Engine Change
#1
Have any of you had to deal with the process to make your truck CA legal (smog) after doing an engine change. I may get a 6.0L out of a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 for cheap. So, I emailed the air resources board and asked them what I need to do after I do the engine change.
Well, according to them you can't put an engine from a car into a truck or vice versa (which sucks, there goes the LS1 or LS6 hopes). You have to get an engine for your vehicle that is the same year or newer than your current vehicle. The engine has to be one that normally goes in the size truck you have. In other words, you can't take an engine from a 2500 or 3500 series truck and put it in a 1500 series truck (which is stupid!). It also says the engine must be CA certified or be bought from someone in CA (for smog reasons). Also, once you do the engine change you have to setup an appointment with a referee that will make sure all the smog equipment is hooked up, you have the proper engine in your vehicle, and perform a smog check. Geez, this sounds like a bitch to do. Who here has done this stuff and are they that particular?

Let me put it too you this way............They "look" the same, go to a little smog station in your hood and put it through. Just make sure all of your SMOG stuff is hooked up and correct. I am not the least bit concerned about passing SMOG with mine.

are the emissions levels the same for, say a 4.8-8.1 ? what i'm getting at is if they punch in the vin. it should tell them what you should have. and if the levels for what you had are much lower than what you put in it would be harder to pass. unless of course you find someone who will cheat. some guys will fudge on the visual, but out here the only way to cheat is to stick the probe in a different vehicle. cause the info is sent directly to h.q. might want to set something up before you go to the expense. hopefully they did'nt ask for any info, don't tell them anything. love the fact that they seemed so concerned, we all know it's just another huge source of income for them to misappropriate. if they were concerned about pollution, it would'nt matter to them what you put in it as long as it met the required standards. sorry i know that was'nt to helpful. e
