Default question about 5-speeds

How well do the 5-speeds found behind the 4.8l hold up to some real horsepower. Of course i have seen the episode of trucks when he beats up on a joe gibbs and i noticed that truck was a stick. I know the setup on the gibbs truck is pretty tame, and most of the money you spend on that truck is to make it pretty. I currently have a z28 with a t56, and i know these trannies will handle just about whatever you wanna throw at it and i was just wondering how long the 5-speed would hold up to a 4.8 with a radix and some other goodies. I'm thinking something along the line of 375-400rwhp. I'm thinking pretty hard about getting rid of my car and picking up a 00-02 scsb, 4.8, 5-speed truck. By the way, some of you guys have some absolutely gorgeous, and badass trucks! I am impressed!

thanks,
trav

Yeah that tranny will hold up but as with any manual you need a good clutch I doubt the stocker would live well under those circumstances.

sweet! If i remember correctly that is the only modification done to the tranny on the gibbs truck also..i think they use a centerforce df. How come there aren't very many people on this site that run the 5-speed? Everyone seems to have a 5.3 with a 4l60e, and that poor 4l60e keeps dying on them. It seems obvious but i might as well ask anyways..the tranny will bolt up to a 5.3 or 6.0 too, right? I'm sure it does but i better ask first.

thanks again,

trav

It's a New Venture 5 speed. They are pretty rugged.

Yeah it will bolt up to the bigger engines you may have to change the flywheel Im not sure though. A properly built automatic will shift and get you there quiicker than a manual. You would have to have a stall of course. I raced a stock 4.8 rcsb with the 5speed and everytime he shifted I gained a little more on him cause mine just jars your teeth and shifts. I have a stall so he didnt gain anything on me at the start.

That's funny because I've heard (on here) that the 5-spd is not very strong and is why it isn't available in anything bigger than the 4.8 . You can check in the trans forums or do a search. Some others guys might chime in.

I think its the clutch concerns, not the trans. Most manual tranys are pretty rugged.
