Purchasing LM7 Long Block.... Thoughts, feedback, insight on the next move?
#11
In my opinion half of the benifit of going with the LS is using the computer shifted overdrive trans like a 4L80E. I usually use a 4L80E, but I did put a 6.0L in an 87 G20 and left the stock transmission (TH400) but its a box and with the 3.08 gears would not have benifited much from overdrive. If you currently have a TH350 or 700r4, I would pull it and swap to a newer trans.
Thank you for the reference on BP & Speed. I did NOT run across them in my LS research travels.
No way I'd run a Fi Tech unit on my truck. If you want trouble free standalone systems for LS engines, go with a Holley Terminator system.
It's a harness, computer, wideband oxygen sensor all in one purchase. Then just buy the correct size fuel injectors for your horsepower needs and have a large enough fuel pump.
The $500 intake system is a waste of money man, it's a freaking tube with a filter. You could build one for 1/5th the cost.

Also for $3600 that kinda hurts for a stock 5.3 with just a cam.
Just finshed a 408 for a customer. 6.0 was $600 from a buddy. Sold rotating assembly for $200.
K1 Crank, K1 Rods, DSS Pistons, King XPN Bearings, M10295 Oil Pump, Cam Motion Cam, Cam Motion Pushrods ,243 Heads with .670" Springs/Ti retainers, Johnson 2110R LIfters and Machine work with balancing it come out to $4100.
I know you said you didnt want to go thru building something but it sure saves some money and that was a extreme example.
Finished a 5.3 for my wifes tahoe last week and have less than $1100 in it with bearings, rings, oil pump, Lifters, cam motion cam and springs.
I see several ways to save you quite a bit of money.

How much of an upgrade is the 4l80E to the 4l60e? I'm fairly settled on the 60 but i am certainly curious.
Your post made me look into Holley's Dominator/Terminator/Sniper options. I have saved a couple. Don't know much about FiTech honestly. Seemed/looked good.
I'd originally planned on getting either an LQ4, LQ9 OR LY6. But felt after looking into the 5.3, i could get closer to 350-400hp with some addons and putting together a solid motor that way for less.
I'm already looking at some of the Holley packages to replace my original choice.
So if an ECM from one of the holley packages is in play, there is no need for a tuner?
Please PM me.

I talk all my customers that really want to beat on their truck to go ahead and do a 4l80 swap because a working 4l60 is worth some money where a broken or burnt up 4l60 is worth almost nothing.
FI Tech stuff has been nothing but a pain in the butt to work with. Out of about 20 vehicles only 1 worked good. Swapped others over to Holley or Stock PCM and ran great.
Holley uses Proprietary software to tune with. And its almost dummy proof.

Launching!
iTrader: (18)
Sound suggestions you're being given.
100% Holley Terminator Xmax and don't look back.
Power wire from ECU (direct to battery)
Ground wire from ECU (direct to battery)
Switched power
Ground wire (Transmission) to chassis
ECT sensor (coolant)
Oil psi sensor
Coils (odd/even banks labeled)
Two Grounds for coils (connect to back of cylinder heads)
Injectors to each side (they are labeled 1/3/5/7 and 2/4/6/8 so very straight forward)
Crank sensor
Cam sensor
Transmission Power
Transmission ground
Transmission switched
Transmission main connector (into transmission itself to control)
VSS sensor (Transmission)
Turbine speed sensor for the 4L80
Wideband
MAT (or basically IAT)
MAP
IAC
TPS
Run one or pair of outputs for electric fans
Green wire for fuel pump relay trigger
It is a very user friendly setup for sure.
