I've tried to convince my friend to get a tune but he wants a programmer.
Which do you guys recommend, HPPT or Predator or Superships or other and why.
I'm familiar with HPPT but not the others.

don't get a predator, for some reason he is spending the money and being an idiot for not getting a nelson tune. If he has to have a hpp3 then get it off ebay or the junk yard here, I am sure their are plenty of people here using them as paperweights now.

I agree, don't get the POS predator. If at this point he can't afford a custom tune, tell him to get a used HPP3 for now. When he is ready he resell the HPP3 for what he baught it for and upgrade to a custom tune. This is exactly what I did. I was tempted to get me the Predator when it was the new toy on the block but after many reviews and friend's horror stories about it, I decided to go another route.

I love my HPPIII. I got around 5 tenths ET reduction, and when I go from my 20's to my 17" Escalade wheels in the winter, I use it to correct my speedo. If gas prices keep going up, I'm gonna kick it down a notch to 87 tuning and run regular gas....these things you can't do at your leisure with a custom tune. Not denying the better performance all around with a custom tune, just saying my HPPIII works great for me. Sooner or later I'll get on the ball and get this thing custom tuned...as soon as I get the major mods done in the next couple months. HPPIII hands down, and like they said, get one used and you can always recoupe "MOST" if not all of your money down the road.

Doing same here just got my old 2000 HPPIII upgraded to a 2004 for the Tahoe. So no money out of my pocket for now. Well other than the $200 I spent origanally on the 2000 HPPIII. Planning to go to custom down the road. For now the HPPIII will do.
Since I'm at it I dotice on this 04 when the trans shifts from 1 to 2
(with the firmmer shifting option with HPPIII) I actually hear a little "ttiinnkk" noise from the driveshaft, rearend or maybe the u joints.
Sounds just like my 70 LeMans when it shifts------400 pontiac couple of bolt-ons, 350 turbo trans with shift-kit.
