Default power track differentials

Has any one tried one of this kits. A freind saw it in a JEGS mag. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...8&prmenbr=361. What do you guys think of istalling this kit so you want have to remove the carrier. If this kit works it would be cheaper then buying a posi. unit and labor to install.

I have installed 6 of these, and they're cheaper conterpart the Lock-Rite. They will work in a diff with the factory open carrier only. If you have the limited slip option, it will not work as is. They are pretty decent lockers, but regardless what the company says, they can be harsh on the street. It is a typical full blown locker with all the down sides of one.

If you have the open carrier, they will work without having to reset the gears. You may have to pull the carrier to clear the center pin past the ring gear, but you will not have to reshim it, etc. As long as you mark the position of the bearing caps when you pull them off, then torque them to spec in the proper position when you reinstall them you will be fine. The only special tools you need to install it is a torque wrench and a peice of a coat hanger (to aid in reinstalling the c-clip and springs in the locker).

These lockers are well known and widely used in the offroad community, but probably wouldn't be best for a high horsepower street application. If you notice in the picture, it uses very small teeth to actually lock the axles together. This will eventually wear out and/or break. My powertrax lockers would usually go 2-3 years before they needed replacing in an off-road vehicle.

The bottom line, if you have an open diff and just want to get some traction while you save up for a gear change and stronger diff, then these will work for the time being. That is if you don't mind banging and chirping around all over the place. As far as traction goes, they hook better than any limited slip, until it breaks or wears out.

had one and didn't like it.it would get traction for sure but when you would be in a parking lot and turn the rear tires would chirp.to good a traction i quess.i took it out and went with a eaton posi and loved it.install and posi cost me 500.00 though.
