Power steering pump squeeling. Is it going out?
#1
My pump is squeeling and has a slow fluid leak. I filled it to the top and it still squeaks.
I was going to just replace the orings, but I was wondering if the whole thing is going out. What causes the squeeling?
I'm pretty sure it's the PS, because it squeels louder if I am parked and I turn the wheel just enough to put load on the PS pump.
It's not a horribly loud squeel, but it's enough to be annoying. Is there something I can lubricate, or should I just replace the whole thing?
Has anyone else's gone out? It has 175k miles on it.

Thanks for any input.

Yea, I've heard of more than one of the pumps going out on these trucks. Especially with 175k, I'd put a new pump in. The noise could be coming from the front bearing in the pump or the pump may just be worn internally.

run some 80w90 in it and see what it sounds like.i ran that in my old cj7 back in high school and it slowed the leak to.
i also run gear oil in my wrangler power steering.it has 150k on it and was makin noise's so i filled it up with that and its been fine ever since.

Anyone who does this in the future, I recommend paying the extra $15 for the pump with the reservoir already attached. I swapped it all over, but it was a b**** because the bottom nut is very short and in a recessed area. It was also hard to get leverage on the nuts because of the awkward shape of the assembly.
Also, the pulley install tool was a worthless POS, so after cursing and throwing stuff, I fabbed up my own tool with a strap wrench, a bolt, a socket, and some washers. If that hadn't worked, I was going to bake it in the oven and then run outside and slide it on like some people do with the crank pulley.
Three hours later, the leaking and squeeling problems are solved, but I'm sore as hell.

Yeah every time I plan for an easy hour job, something goes wrong and it takes hours longer!
I forgot to mention the front seal was leaking on the old one. It was easy to tell with the old pulley removed.
