Sounds like a plan to me, you have any idea what size belt I would need?

Not really......you could measure it and go to the local parts store....They can look it up by size....

OK...so I was wrong.....sorry about that (I ought to learn to be 100% certain before I open my mouth )

Anyone know if the 1/2 ton Rack and Pinion system can be converted over for use on the 3/4 and 1 tons ???...specifically the 2500LD that used the 1/2 ton frame ??

Alright, thanks for your help BlownChevy. I'm on my way to the parts store before they close.

I just snapped my pulley shaft the Sunday before last. Power steering went out and the brakes had no assist.
Two days later, I put in a remanufactured steering pump from Napa. BTW, get the one with the reservoir attached, it's a B*tch to swap reservoirs.
The next day, I snapped the second pulley shaft. I'm now on my second reman steering pump.
I'd seriously look into getting an AGR Performance steering pump and not another remanufactured. Also look at the AC Delco reman pumps if you can't swing the AGR.
But, if the truck's under warranty, the dealer's got a nice job ahead of them.

Check out the pics of both snapped pulley shafts in this thread.

Good luck with your fix.
