From the crappy pics, we can't say that there is or isn't anything wrong with the tune. From his description, there is "some black around the top of the threads", which means poo. Check the electrode/tip (and apparently the white center isolator) for color, or post some better pics. Don't touch the tune until you do this if you want an informed opinion about what to do.
