Okay, I got:

Ben's right, that do-dad in the picture is the temp sensor.

The thing I was looking at was for the fog lights.

I pulled my front end off because I dinged up the bumper a bit a few weeks ago. Apparently it was a big enough hit to dislodge that fog light lead and put it nowhere near where it belonged. That's why I didn't see it on the other side of the truck, even with the bumper off. At least that's my plea right now. I gotta lay off this crack.

Okay, let me try to redeem myself...

Radio shack sells little indoor/outdoor digital thermometers. The display is about 1.25x3". They have a little probe with the same type resistor used in the GM apps (measured resistance of both at the same temps, they were dead on)

If one without the temp/compass mirror wanted to, they could get one of these, and wire it up. I know it's not the coolest/cleanest looking thing, but it might be handy. It should be pretty easy to make temporary too.
