i wouldnt say thats for sure what happened. ive checked gaps in several of my JY motors and never had to actually open them up since they were already large enough.
if OP was curious, he could check the rings on some of the pistons that survived.

I thought about that but ended up just tossing them in the trash, waiting on machine shop now to bore block and valve job on heads replace bent reluctor wheel. Going with forged Mahle pistons and rods. Going a lot slower than I had hoped partly because I don`t have much time to work on it.

I have a good 2 piece reluctor on the 4.8 crank I`m going to use. Until now I had know idea that a one piece reluctor was available.

Finally have a little progress to report, the machine shop called this morning and said everything is ready to pick up. $3200 dollars for block hone, Mahle pistons and rings valve job and porting 706 heads, balancing and new timing gear set. I havent had an engine at machine shop in decades so not sure if thats good bad or just ugly price. So tired of truck being dead in the driveway I'm just glad to make progress.

Price's sure have changed. . With out seeing the actual bill its hard to know.

I just had my windshield replaced and it was double what I paid in 2015... When I was talking with the owner. His cost on everything has gone up 38% alone just this year.

Good to hear progress, mine is taking forever to finish as well. Parts and good people are hard to find now so it takes longer. I'm a marine electrician and my parts costs have almost doubled this year already...
