That "rebuild" looks like a Krylon "rebuild": dingleberry hone on a block that had a serious steel failure in it. Cam lobe/lifter going down, stuff like that. Garbage.
It's ruined.
No way I would consider a block "new" and/or "runnable" with that many vertical scratches in it that are that serious. Esp with boost. Keep looking.
Personally I'd just look for the motor out of a grandpa truck that he drove off the side of the road, and just run it as-is, if I could find such a thing. No sense in "rebuilding" anything if you don't have to. The $$$ difference between a CHERRY 5.3 JY short block and a "core only" one is AHELLUVALOT LESS THAN the cost of a "rebuild".
Ya I agree my gut insticnt was not good, gunna start looking for a JY block. Will have heads off tomorrow. Found metal bits in the turbine side of the turbo, aluminum and magnitic bits that I think are rings.
It's not the vertical lines you have to worry about, It's the lousy hone job he did. The rings will never seal properly and it will always burn oil.

This thread has me scheming on my LS6 block, that I am pretty certain also has scratches because it shitted a lifter, that also damaged the block at the lifter bore
Got the engine apart this weekend, damage is worse than I expected. Not really sure how the entire #5 piston can be gone, still trying to sort out in my head the sequence of event that went on inside this engine.
