Default Newbie here... Great site!!

I am a newbie here but been around LS1.com a few years with the 99 Formula I used to have. I see a lot of familiar names here from ls1.com. I am from Houston as I see a lot of you guys are. My true pride and joy are sportbikes and I race a Hayabusa(9.35@151.50) at HRP every sunday. (Yes, I know Nineball ) I now have a 2000 silverado regular cab that I use as daily transportation/tow vehicle but I am going to start modifying it slightly for more power and a more sporty look. I am sure I will be seeking advice from you guys on the best parts and places to buy em. Not gonna get wild, just get the most out of the stock motor. I am about to purchase an intake for the truck first but I am on a tight budget(bikes are expensive!)I think I like the K&N FIPK best so far and I am working on a deal on a used one. I keep seeing a lot about the UPD. Which one makes the best power at all ranges and sounds good? What are you truck pros using? Sorry about this long book, just trying to get acquainted. Later fellas

Welcome to the site. There is a wealth of information here.

I am currently running the GenII but I really like the idea of the UPD. I probally would have gotten it if it had been out a year and a half ago. I have been more than happy with the GenII though.

excuse my newbieness but which one is the GENII? Is that the FIPK? I just read a deal in Sport Truck mag where they tested the MAC intake which is basically just a new air box with the stock tube and baffles and it gained 12hp!! I was shocked that there is that much power hiding in the intake system. I would think a full tube system like a FIPK or Air raid would make much more power, not to mention sound better.

BTW, I have made 3 passes in my truck with everything totally stock except for a 2 cham;ber flowmaster in the stock location and it ran a best of 15.55@87mph and this was with 30" tires. The 60' was pathetic at 2.34 but I think with a shorter tire I will take 1.5 tenths off that atleast. These suckers have no low end power off the line, especially with the tall tires. Thinking of going with a 275/55R16 on my 16X8 AR Python wheels. Thats about 27" tall. Then do a 2/3 drop on it. My goal is to get in the mid 14s with complete stocker reliabilty. Plus I still use it to pull a trailer on the weekends.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome!

Whats up man, welcome to the board.....

Yeah, the GenII is the FIPK.....

Right now its tough to compare the UPD to the K&N FIPK, since the UPD is so new. I am sure in the near future some guys on here will do a CAI swap on the dyno, and we'll get to see the results. As far as me, I have the K&N FIPK, and definitely like it. If you ask me, both are pretty much equal in performance (both using K&N Filters and no tweaks) Its mostly a choice of design, and in no doubt, the UPD looks better.

yea, and you dont have to worry about that fan shroud space problem if you have the UPD i presume. I had fun trimming mine up when i put the K&N FIPK on.

i will probably go with the UPD when i get some extra cash. how much are they if you already have the filter?

Hows it going Dino? I am new to the game but my experience with many other cars (LS1 TA and Formula) I would think that the restriction in the system is the entrance to the air box and the tube with the sound bellows. The UPD uses the stock lower air box. The lid looks to flow very well but its still pulling through the small hole in the air box inlet. Back in the early 90s we had great luck with conical type K&N s with a smooth pipe on 5 liter mustangs, I would think the same would be for the FIPK. Thats probably what I am going to get. I do understand about the underhood heat but atleast the FIPK has a backing plate and seal but still allows it to pull air from an open area. But hell, what do I know.

Mid 14s with a reg cab should be no problem.....(take it from an ext. cab)

Check out hypertechs programmer, the HPPIII....
www.hypertech-inc.com to read up on it.....or you may also be interested in ls1 edit, which I am sure you have heard of, similar to the HPPIII, but definitely more detailed with more options..... Either will shave serious time off the 1/4........

Also, quite a few guys on here are also setting up custom ram air setups with their UPD intakes.....Running tubing from the passenger side tow hook opening all the way to the bottom of the stock air box......If the box is sealed correctly, it definitely should provide a real ram-air setup....... You can also do this with the FIPK, however, you would have to seal the entire air box, and I'd prefer just to use the air for cooling, and to simply, well, provide more cool air and keep the housing cool (naturally the heat shields can't do it all)....

As soon as I get the intake I am going to get the HPP3. I mainly want to stiffen the shifts and get a some more power. Is the HPP3 power tuning noticeable on the street? How much will it firm up the slush box? I would like to get rubber on the 1-2 shift but not sure if it will stiffen it THAT much. I had a 98 TA that would catch second gear rubber stock but the truck shifts much weaker. My over all plan is the intake, cooler stat, Hpp3 and a more creative, better sounding(louder) exhaust then what I have. Then lower it and change tires and that "should" be it for me but you know how that goes. I see these trucks running high 13s on motor and can't believe it. Lotta $$ obviously.

Welcome to the site. I think you will like it here. Keep us informed of your pending mods. I have probably seen you at HRP before. My FIPK is for sale too. It has less than 3k on it and I will sell it with the recharge kit that I have not used. Let me know if your other deal falls through. Again, Welcome

What are you wanting to get on the FIPK?? I would rather by one local so I don't have to ship it. If you don't want to post, shoot me an email and I will tell you about the deal I am in right now with the other FIPK. Thanks ZXALAN@ev1.net

DINO, what size tires are you using on your 16s with the 2/4 drop? I like it! I have 16X8 AR Pythons in Chrome my girlfriend bought me so I will be keeping them. I will put a shorter tire on it and will go either 2/3 or 2/4 drop. I am thinking 275/55R16 or something.
