Default New and Need Cheap Mods!!!

Well I am new to the forums. I did not even know they were here!!!

Anyways,
I have a 99 sierra 5.3 stepside.
I have a flowmaster installed with dumps and that is it.
I bought it in July and now I am ready for some mods.
In Jan i put 20's on it and I am running a little slower then I want to be.

Please help me fine some cheap and good mods!!!

Thanks
Christopher

Christopher...

Welcome to the party pal!

First, check to see if you too have the flase knock '99s usually do. Then get a custom tune. Those two will make your truck run soooooo much better.

Then perhaps a set of 4.10:1 gears as you're running fairly tall wheels and tires now. If you already have 3.73:1 gears, then I'd look into a stall converter.

Later headers, air intake, etc.

Eric

The 20s don't help accelaration at all.A tuner would be a good place to start a used HPP3 will cost about a $150 and offer a small performance increase along with removing the 99mph topend limiter and calibrating the speedo for different tire diameters.A cold air intake is fairly cheap and offers a mild performance increase. From there things get more expensive.Long tube headers offer a nice increase at about $700 plus installation,a Yank TT3000 offers a huge increase in performance at about $750 plus installantion and aftermarket cam offer a really big performance especially with the headers at about $650 plus installation. The moral of this story is speed is not cheap.

heres a nice cheap route i had thought about at one time. '01 vette cam w/ ls6 springs, cut out, custom fabricated air intake, and a hypertech. thats very cheap and a good wad of power i'd think

I give you fair warning... after spending a little bit of time on this board, reading what other guys are doing with their trucks while getting a little taste of what the cheaper mods will get you, yet them not being enough to take a lightning out (which I think everyone on here will agree that they are our main competition, along with the new viper trucks for the really fast guys ) you are going to end up wanting to spend a lot of money as soon as possible...

I first found this board last Nov. just wanting to doa S/C and a cam... Now I'm getting ready to P&P my heads and do a cam this spring... and try for a 3000 stall, beefed up tranny, 20's and hopefully some airbags (not necessarily that order for the 20's and 'bags) but by the end of the summer... with the combination of this board and my 4 friends who all own lightnings, I might decide to do the whipple b4 the bags and/or 20's...

So consider this a warm welcome from Detroit, and a fair warning to your pocket, you're in for a hell of a ride...

i wouldn't worry about the Hypertech prog. spend the exra $$$ and get a nelson tune its well worth it. and then get you a 75 shot then get him to retune it for free.

Thanks to everyone for the responces!!!
Where do you get a nelson tune and what is the $$$ on it.
I understand the whole getting sucked in thing. I raced remote control cars and I would be spending $400 for the car and then put so much more $$$ on upgrades. It got crazy. There is no telling how many $1000's of $$$ i put into that hobby. but now it is time to play with the truck. I know that I will have to put alot in to beat a lightning(grr i hate them!!!) but for right now I just need it a little faster. I got beat by the small V8 last week. I did not just off the line like him and he had a standard but i do not want it to happen again!!!
Thanks to everyone and keep the help up. I am going to look in to all this stuff. If yall see any good prices on the boards for some good upgrades please let me know!!!
Thanks
Christopher

I consider myself new to this board still as well.
I started out with a Hypertech, dual exhaust, and cold air intake (the starter kit)

Now, in the past month, I have spent around $8000 in parts and my truck is in pieces on a lift in the shop as we speak....lol

BEWARE OF THIS FORUM.....lol....I'm only ribbin' ya.

But seriously, i didn't have a clue about what worked for modding our trucks and have never really worked on them either...I found that I am half-mechanically inclined and am doing a motor/transmission swap with the help of a good bud.
