Default Need info on Cylinder Shutdown Technology

Need to find some information about the new engines that have the ability to shut down some of its cylinders for better economy. The more detailed the better..any articles....tech. documents etc.

Thank you,
Brad

I'm going to edit the title and put a copy of this in the Racers Lounge. I know of at least one person there that might have some info.

It would be awesome if you could just have your computer reflashed and have the cylinder shutdown feature but, I bet there will be some other new hardware involved somehow that will make it impossible for that to happen. We'll see soon I think.

I'll leave this one open just in case any truck guys that don't like to visit other parts of the site have some info.

i don't know anything about it but i would think they would want to hold the exhaust valve open a little to keep you from having to waste the energy of compresing nothing. anyone here think it will really work?

GM is already testing this on some trucks. The way it works is PCM controlled solenoids shut down the valve train (lets the lifters collapse if I remember correctly) and stops pulsing the injectors of certain cylinders during cruising, highway speeds, and idle. I believe the same cylinders are shut down every time and the motor runs as a 6cyl for light loads and 4 cyl. for cruising or idle, and for hard acceleration it will run on all 8.

This is similar to the late 70's early 80's Cadillac 864 motors that didn't work very well, but technology has very much improved since then, guess we will see if it works.

They are calling it "displacement on demand". Search the net for it. Monsters explanation is what I've heard too.

It sounds like a neat idea but just sounds like more things to go wrong. Besides, I bought a V-8 so that it was a V-8 all the time.
