Well, the headers themselves won't make the exhaust note all that much louder, especially if you're still rocking the stock muffler, and the air that you're hearing in the engine bay is from the AIR pump, which is just pumping fresh air out of the two ends of the air injection pipe.

Just an FYI, if you don't have other mods such as a cam or headwork, you probably won't notice much of a power increase from the long tubes until you get higher up in the RPM's. Many guys actually report a loss of power down low, as the bigger exhaust primaries and collectors will allow for more flow, but slow down exhaust velocity and scavenging and may be overkill for a basically stock setup that sees most of it's operation in the low to mid range.

My biggest concern, if I were in your situation, would be the smog police. I would look into some mid lengths that allow you to retain the stock catalyst location and are CARB approved...I believe that Doug Thorley or just Dougg's headers make mids. If nothing is available along those lines, I'd get some shorties as they are your only other choice. I know that most of us frown upon shorties, and I can tell you that I didn't feel any gains back when I had mine, but they usually are worth 5 to 10 rwhp and are better than nothing. I know that there are shorties available with EGR and AIR provisions...back when I bought my stainless Gibson shorties (like 10-11 years ago), those were options.

Maybe ask the shop that did the welding how their other customers get by with long tubes. I'm sure that the headers could be modified to accept the AIR fittings, and you could do a yearly swap for state inspection, I'd mainly be concerned about the spot inspections that the smog ***** subject you to

I wonder if the price is excessive since they're not supposed to be doing those sort of installs in Cali? Not to mention that the guy was cutting and welding to get the PaceSetters to adapt to the factory y-pipe...

Honestly, I'm not sure how you'll pass smog with the LT's in the first place being that you're in Cali.

Sounds like a bunch of tree hugging hippy crap to me.....

It wouldnt be difficult to get a couple AIR fitting welded into a primary of each header.

This link shows an EGR and AIR fitting onto a set of Hooker longtubes for use in California.

Thanks again for your comments guys.... Well the headers are still on i capped off the valves but it still dont sound makes my XR-1 sound like **** it also feels like the exhaust has no power on the way out. The only good thing is that i havent gotten a check engjne light.
@ AjII yup $500 the price for performance add ons is crazy i asked around a couple of shops and a tune will cost me$ 5-550 re-tune 250 and it all depends on what mods. I went to 3 shops to ask about a vette servo and the best price i got was $220
Now i know why a bunch of trucks in my area are ALL SHOW AND NO GO!

get a tune from blackbear or another sponsor instead of a local shop. and i bet after reading the sticky you could do a vette servo yourself, its a cheap, easy, and very worthwile mod.
