Default need help chosing cam

i know there are tons of these threads on this website.
But heres the deal as of right now my truck is mostly stock besides true dual exhaust and tune by Wheatley. my truck is a 99 5.3 Z71. This thread is to help me decide which cam i need. next summer i plan on doing long tube headers and high flow cats.

So i just want to know what people would do in my situation for a cam. im just looking for mainly medium and high end power. but i dont want to lose all of my gas mileage because this is my daily driver and i am a college student that goes back and forth between college station and galveston quite often.

so if i could get some responses it would be a great help.

Do you have an ecsb or a rcsb or what?

Do you have a transmission that will be able to handle the cam? Do you plan on getting a converter to match the cam?

Lot of questions still need to be answered, but if you're just wanting a cam in, 212/218 or 220/220 wouldnt be terrible without a converter. Don't forget youll need hardened pushrods and valvesprings as well with the cam swap...

Personally, I would suggest going with the headers and y-pipe first.

i have an ecsb, i do still have the stock transmission.
would i need to get a different transmission or just do work to the one i already have?

i do plan on getting the headers first for sure.but i will not be getting a y pipe, because of right now my truck is true dualed and i would like to keep it that way so i was thinking coming off of the headers going to an xpipe the straight back to which ever mufflers i decide to get.

and the 212/218 is actually the cam i had been looking into. and the converter was something i really did not want to have to get. and i did know the push rods and spring

SDPC HT1 (214/218 .559/.562 111); LS6 springs; Manley hardened pushrods.

It will need a REAL tune, and would surely benefit from converter and gears if you plan on doing that in the future.
