Default narrowed down to three cams

1. 2002 ls6 cam, 204/218 ish

2. 212/218 .522/.522 114 LSA

3. 216/220 .525/.532 114 LSA

the latter two being comp cams...which of these will work best with stock computer and converter and heads. looking for more torque down low...i can replace the springs if i have to but i can get a set of ls6 springs cheap. thanks for any opinions.

Matt

I'm gonna say I'd go with #2. I'm afraid do to the higher LSA on #1 it would kill the low end. It's just not designed for a 5.3. You might squeak by without programming on #3 but it would be pushing it. You'd also want to get them heavier springs though if your going much over 500 lift. Just my $.02

#2 would be best for stock converter and heads and what not but im not sure if you will get that much of a gain in low end torque.

if you are planning on getting stage 2 heads in a few months you may just want to go with a larger cam right now so that you will be ready when you get ur heads. Most of the stage 2 heads i have seen are designed with cams that have .550 or greater lift in mind.

that's a pretty large cam though...maybe i should go with stage 1 heads...with the 212/218 cam and stage 1 heads and a 3200 stall i'm sure it would perform pretty well.

I think your pushrods are ok until you mill the heads or mess with valve height. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Most aftermarket cams will have a smaller base circle to allow more lobe lift. That will make the stock pushrod short. If the base circle gets too small, then a longer pushrod is needed to get the full lift out of the cam. Or, as in the case of the 02 LS6, a longer valve was used. The stock pushrod is 7.4" but can only be had in increments of .050, so you could buy a 7.45 for longer, and 7.35 for shorter.

None of these cams listed will reqire a different length pushrod. You really wont need to worry unless you get some really big lift going.

it all depends on what else you plan to do down the road. if you plan on adding a supercharger, then go for cam #2 & stage 1 maaaaaybe 2 heads.

if you're going with the 3200 stall converter i say go for cam #3 & stage 2 or 3 heads. none of these cams will give you low end torque. they're all designed for mid-top end power. i have cam #3 and have stage 3 heads. i desperately need a converter, my bottom end is a dog. i highly recommend tuning with which ever cam you go for. if you plan to spray with any of this stuff, you should really look into up grading your bottom end (pistons, rods, etc)
