Default name that sound

at higher rpm's, a sound comes from the engine, sort of a crackling noise. it started around the time i descreened the MAS. so today when i plugged in the new hypertech, made the 1-2 shift at 6200 i get a much longer and louder crackling...faster the engine turns, the more the noise is present. anyone know what this is, because it sure doesn't sound good.

I would suggest the same, and if it keeps doing it, even with good gas, take the tuning out. detonation will melt your **** fast! The HPP has enough features to where it's worth it to me even w/o the tuning. I will still use the speedo, shift and ! speed limiter when I take my tuning out(I use superchips tuning at present anyway, it's a little better)

Does it kinda of sound like popcorn popping or like the ball in a paint can rattling around. If so it's detonation and that's bad.

The descreened MAF and HPP3 tuning both contribute to this by raising timing and leaning the A/F ratio out. Since you can't very easily change the descreened MAF I would at least take the HPP3 tuning out.

Try better gas also if your not running premium.

If you can hear it pinging like that that's bad.

1. so what causes detonation?
2. how/what does it melt?
3. would it be because of the descreened MAS?

sorry for the questions, i'm a little lost in what i may be up against.

popcorn...never thought about it like that. but yup, that's it.

i think your problem is caused from lack of driving skill!

detonation is caused by preignition, basically the fuel ignites before the spark plug fires, basically like a diesel, it is from too much cylinder pressure. this force is pushing the crank in the wrong direction basically so the motor will be turning and then all of the sudden there will be a strong force trying to turn the motor the other way. this high pressure can melt a piston because of the extreme temps that form from this, as well as other parts
