Default My turn for an exhaust thread

I know that we see 10 of these a day, but now I have a question...

Think that I'm going to gut my cats when I do my trans, and I'm tired of my Gibson muffler, so I want to replace it with something...I want to be able to hear it, but I don't want it so loud that every cop turns his head when he goes by. I don't really care about drone, I actually think it's kinda cool...but I'll take muffler that doesn't drone also. The exhaust will be dumped before the axle, and the muffer will be a 3" in/out.

I've been thinking about the 22" Magnaflow, or maybe an 18" Mag...I also have Corsa on my mind, as every Corsa exhaust that I've heard has been awesome, only I haven't heard just their muffler in a non-catback system. I don't like the Borlas that I've heard...sounds too much like a European race car to me. Oh yea, eventually the truck will have a heads/cam LQ9, and the muffler must be stainless steel.

Suggestions?

*EDIT* Uh, it looks like Corsa still only offers full systems, I didn't see just mufflers on their website

Also wanted to add....think I'll add a 3" cutout

I like my big Magnaflows too. Keep in mind that tail pipes play a big role in the sound as well as cats. It's been my experience that gutted cats sound a little "funky" , kinda like an expansion chamber on an old two stroke.

Yea, I've considered that, definitely a good point...I've never run dual gutted cats, but I had a single 3" cat on my 85 MonteSS that was gutted with a Hooker cat back and it sounded awesome (keep in mind this is a Small Block Chevy also). If I could get that sound on my truck I'd be stoked, it was perfect

I thought about the dumps and tips also...thought about a muffler with a tip on it...but I don't want that hot exhaust blowing at the rear end

with you dumping before the axle you are going to have drone with any muffler you choose

I don't mind drone...it's just the sound of the exhaust IMO...I have drone now and my daughter loves it lol (or she did last time we were in the truck together a year and a half ago ).

You can fix that easy enough. Cut the cats off, gut them, weld in a piece of 3" tubing, and weld them back into the exhaust. No more expansion chamber or flow inhibitor.

Exactly, thats why I saved my old cats. Thought about slicing them in two and just tacking them on the exhaust pipe to look like they are in place!

On another note...... any muffler with no tailpipe or just a short dump will have a very deep note and be louder in addition to the drone.

Hey I had a 84 Monte SS back in the day too.

I think you need dual glass packs or straight pipe with the big ole redneck tips out the back
