I guess the d-shaft is more of an issue on ECs and CC. My intermediate bearing doesn't look too stout and not lubeable.

sidenote, but probably not worth mentioning
my D shaft was rusty as hell
so I primed and painted it the
2nd day I had it

I dont see how a rusting driveshaft can get stronger
and Im sure that isnt the main reason they break
but every little bit helps

not to mention how they look in some of the exhaust pics
around here

My stock driveshaft blew on the dyno going about 130mph or so. Definitely ditch the aluminum one and get a 3" steel.

Mine blew on my 4x4. It was a 1-piece.

How much did the 3 inch steel one run you?

about $300.

I wouldnt really worry about it unless you have over 300whp, or plan on taking your truck upwards of 120 or so. And believe me, that feels REAL sketchy in a 4x4

I don't plan on exceeding 100 mph but you never know when you might have to. That's why I plan on eliminating the speed limiter when I buy a retuned PCM. As far as I know, reprogramming is the only way to do it. The issues about tire and driveshaft performance are important considerations too.

GM has been doing some strange things with driveshafts though and I wish I knew why. They went from two-piece units to one-piece alloy units to who knows what else.

My '02 K2500HD ECSB came from the factory with a huge one-piece alloy driveshaft. It looked like it was 5" - 6" in diameter. Due to some tranny shift problems, the dealership, in their infinite wisdom, decided that I needed a new nickle-plated yoke. The only way to get it fast was to order a whole new driveshaft. Guess what I got as a replacement; A 3" dia. STEEL shaft. Why? Where the alloy ones breaking?

If anyone has any inside info, I'd sure love to hear it.

I have already takin my truck a little over 120 and yes it is scary in a 4wd. You start floating all over the place so I dont really see myself going any faster bu would like to have the piece of mind that Im not going to chunk a driveshaft haulin *** down the freeway. And if all goes well when i come back from alabama this summer my truck will be putting out over 400hp to the rear wheels plus a 100 or so shot of nitrous so yeah Im probably going to need one.

There was a TSB about those yokes creating driveline noises, so dealerships were replacing them. On deceleration, there would be sort of a squeaking noise that sounded like the body was moving on the frame. At least thats what it sounded like to me, lol. Turned out it was the yoke in the driveshaft. They replaced it with the nickel-plated yoke that you are referring to, and that solved the problem.

I would feel MUCH safer with a 3" steel driveshaft, rather than the stock aluminum one. Ive had my driveshaft blow on the dyno, pieces went everywhere, even took out my tailshaft housing.
