Default MAF screen removal when installing cold air intake??

Hey, I have a buddy who works at a GM dealer in my area.I told him that when I put my cold air intake on, I removed the MAF screen. He talked to his GM tech teacher, and he said it wasnt very good for gas mileage. He said you will pick up a few horsepower, but will lose some MPG. Hw true is this. I have had it off since i bought the truck, so i have nothing to compare too. It is a 03 gmc sierra 5.3 2wd. Anyone else's thought on this?????

I work for GM too....and I will tell you that this has been an double sided debate for yeras now. But I can also tell you that in applications like a Corvette or Camaro where the MAF is straight inline with the Throttle Body, removing the screen is not a bad mod. But in a Truck where the MAF is around a corner to the Throttle Body, then it's not a good idea. The MAF screen straightens out the air flow pulses and reduces the turbulance entering the TB.

So to cut it short.......I don't do it to my truck.

I did it on my 6.0 denali and it runs pretty much identical one way or another, mpg and hp wise. I still have my stock maf/screen saved, and just bought a spare to modify.

On a completely stock application you will gain some due to the way the timing curve is set up and how rich they are programmed for. Unless you have the pcm calibrated for it though it's not worth it on a modified truck though.

Man, this should be an automated response when the words MAF and de-screen are entered into the title of a thread.
