Default Maf Question

Has anyone heard anything about taking the screen off the MAF. If so, what are the pro's and cons. I have a 01 SCSB Z-71, HPP3, 160 STAT, K&N, THROTTLE BODY SPACER, FLOWMASTERS. Also I was wondering about LS1 electric fans. How many horse?

Don't bother with the MAF descreen. You won't gain any power.
E-fans will free up some HP...what...10HP??

Hey thanks for the info, what about going to an aftermarket MAF, or even going to the Z06 like other people have been talking about?

You don't need it ... the stock one is fine. The one on your truck is the same as the one on a Camaro or T/A. I say put your money somewhere else.

Fans are nice though ... It makes things so much easier to work on and it frees up power. It also makes the engine compartment look a whole lot better.

I took out the screen on mine and it gave it a little bit better throttle response! It won't hurt anything as long as you don't touch the sensors in the middle.

I think someone on this forum or maybe another who logged their truck before and after the MAF descreening and all they got was some pinging.
But every truck is different I guess

Dont take out the screen. It does NO good. Log your truck before and after and see for yourself. LTrms will more than likely be + indicating a lean condition. I took mine out when I first got my truck and didnt know about this site. Progressively my truck ran crappier and crappier. I took out my screenless MAF and put in a new one WITH the screen. Made a world of difference, ran 100 times better!!! If I were you I wouldnt even waste the time taking the MAF off to poke the screen out. A slightly lean condition will give some the impression of better throttle response. Only real need to descreen the MAF is if you are making some big HP numbers and need the extra flow. But a tune to accomodate for the absence of the screen and flow is a must IMO. The aftermarket MAF's just lean you out, pings nice and loud! Save your money and put it towards a Radix!!

i was one of those who got the pinging because of the screen removal. i didn't notice it at first and kinda discarded the noise. as time went on it got worse. right when i hit about 4500 rpm's and up it'd start to ping real good. don't waste your time descreening, and if you do...don't waste your screen, keep it in good condition. but then you have guys that have had no problems doing this too. either way, the gains wouldn't be enough to prove anything.

I descreened mine before I got my granatelli I didnt have a problem with pinging.
What kinda gas are you all running. I run 93 Amocco truck has never pinged.
Well at least not N/a. It pinged a little one time spraying and i cut the spray off with the quickness. I put colder plugs in it and it ran fine on the spray. I havent had my truck dynoed yet but im hoping im in the 260 rwhp range without the spray.
