Ly6 swap and build
#1
So I'm finally getting around to doing the 6.0 swap...I have a LY6 (at least i think i do, it's out of an 08 van with 8th digit k right?) anyways i have it out and on a stand in my high performance class, I have the option to put flat top pistons in it and a ls7 cam for free if you guys think it would be worth it, and it's going in a 2003 GMC Sierra that has a 4.8 in it now....as far as i know i just need the lingenfelter module and the knock sensor harness correct?
any info or advice is strongly appreciated.
thanks,
steve

Your engine, if it’s out of a ’08 Van with the “K” engine code should be as follows:
2008 Truck
Code = K, RPO = LY6, Engine Gas, 8 cyl, 6.0L, SFI, FE
If you have the opportunity to install a set of flat-top’s now, no it wouldn’t be a bad plan to do so. There are most likely better cams than the LS7 out there for you application, but if your getting a good deal on one, hell it will even work decent. Just realize that the lift will not be as advertised as it is in an LS7, due to your engine having 1.7 rockers vs the 1.8’s of the LS7. You are also right on that you would need the signal converter box from Lingenfelter and a knock sensor harness extension, but you will also need the camshaft position sensor harness extension due to the Gen IV engine having the sensor located in the timing cover vs the rear of the block like your existing Gen III engine. If it were me and I were planning on pulling the engine apart to replace the pistons anyway, I would have the reluctor wheel swapped out on the crankshaft so you wouldn’t no longer have the need for the Lingenfelter box. It’s cool to keep one from having to dive into a new motor when performing a swap, but if you’re going into anyway, why risk adding more components that have the possibility of causing you issues down the road.

thank you very much, i completely forgot about the cam sensor, i am definitely putting the ls7 cam in because i got it for free, i may not put the flat tops in just because i don't know if i want to take the heads off and have to get gaskets and arp's.
