yes, and yes. But "needing" a converter is personal choice. IMO a small converter with a stock cam would be a good upgrade. A converter will 99.999% of the time, make your truck much quicker (m3srt is the exception ).

What exactly about the truck/powerband are you not happy with? Are you wanting more power or better mpg? What are you willing to sacrifice to get what you want?

i want more torque down low so it pulls out easier when loaded and while cruising on the highway. seems like it downshifts to easily or unlocks convertor to easily or maybe im just used to my old diesel work trucks.

I have a tr224 in my 6.0, but if i were pulling trailers everyday I wouldn't want something that big. I used to have the high lift 212/218 and it had lots of torque down low and you don't need to run a converter.

Although I may add, I'm driving on the stock converter now with the 224 and it is completely fine, but I have never towed with it so I can't tell you from real world experience.

that book is a little old now too. the increased power was compared to a 1999 5.3...I think. I'm also thinking GM increased 10HP with a cam swap from 2000 to 2001. The original cams were REALY flat
