how do you know that you need newer rods? Are the ones that you're asking about, LS1s are they hardened?

Unless GM changed something lately, everything is the same between LS1 vs 4.8/5.3 other then the bore sizes, intakes, intake valve size (1.88 trucks vs. 2.02 Fbodies) and manifolds/computer/wire harness.

i have read in some places that you may need longer pushrods if you use the 2002 z06 cam. because it has a smaller base circle

i'm pretty sure you need the 7.4" hardened pushrod for the 2002 ls6 cam to make up the difference for the 2002's smaller base circle; gm just used longer valves on this engine to make up the difference. you need hardened pushrods with this engine because your new redline will be around 6500 rpms after tuning for this cam.

FWIW, I ran a 02 LS6 cam for about 12k miles with my STOCK 4.8 push rods. The cam does have a .050 smaller base circle, so to be at the factory preload on the lifters, you would need .025 longer push rods, but there is enough travel in the stock hydraulic lifters to make up for the .025 difference.
