Lq4 "build" / longevity mods
#1
Basic "build" / mods to fix some nasty lifter tick noises plus pickup a small performance gain all on a budget with a high mileage motor.
Plan is 10:1 compression by milling down the heads, better pushrods? (need shorter?), GM gaskets (maybe VICTOR REINZ?), ARP head bolts (for easy install), ls7 lifters, (maybe) new lq4 cam from GM, Z06 beehive or equivalent valve springs (LS6), lap the valves, clean up the intake and send out injectors for cleaning and flow testing.
Maint. items: oil pump, front cover gaskets and oil pan gasket, ls2 timing set with Trick Flow adaptor.
I have an excel file attached that I would really appreciate you guys looking over. Lists out all the stuff I plan to do with part numbers, etc. Just want a couple people to look it over an give me feed back on if the parts I have listed are worth the cost vs. the other options I can get from Rock auto.
I think the LS7 lifters, LS2 dampener setup, ls6 springs, and milling the 317 heads down to give me 10.x:1 compression would be a noticeable improvement. The engine is pretty high mileage and I am just trying to freshen some parts up to keep it reliable for a while. Within the next 2 or so years I will do a full re-build.

You are on the right track, but I would make some smallish changes.
LS2 chain is a must
LS7 lifters or something better is a good idea.
LS6 springs are a good option.
Things I would add to your list:
Trunion upgrade for rockers.
Hardened push rods couple different manufactures out there have them for about $90 any length you need.
A baby cam, no stock cam will give you the performance of even a mild cam. The 212/218 low lift is perfect for this build. Mild enough for daily stop and go, but also fun enough to put a huge smile on your face.
I would choose to get your parts from sdpc, BTR or speed Inc etc they have excellent service and great prices.
I would also go with stock 243/799 heads. Instead of milling your 317s.

I thought about the trunion upgrade but the stock rockers have been fine for 256K miles and just fine on another motor I have to 180K in mostly stock applications so I wasn't sure if it is really needed.
At this point I am pretty set on keeping the stock Cam and only replacing it with another stock if mine looks bad. Strictly due to there being what I assume is worn Cam bearings. My first oil change after buying the truck I found a large amount of VERY small metal particles in the oil. I assume most of those are from the Cam bearings. I have pretty constant oil pressure around 40 PSI.I don't want to toss a brand new upgraded Cam in the motor if bearings are worn.
I will check out those vendors. Thanks for the feed back!
